Would anyone know if they make a luggage rack to replace the pillion seat - one that would use the same mounting holes for the bolts - so that way you could swap-out the luggage rack and go back to the pillion if needed.

Don't know of any rack that replaces the pillion, but I bought a spare pillion off ebay with the intent to use the pan on which to build a new, wider, improved pillion.

However, I never when through with that project. Maybe you could use the pan as the base for a rack. Let me know if you're interested. Would probably let it go pretty cheap.

Good luck.

I wanted a trunk and a backrest. The one in the post above was smaller that I wanted. Found the trunk on Ebay and made the rack to mount it out of round and square aluminum tube. and mounted it using 1 1/2 x 1/16 stainless stock.

I brazed the aluminum togetther using rods from http://durafix.com/ and a propane torch.
The only problem I had was that it took awhile to get the round tube that was almost 1/4" thick hot enough. (The blue towel was soaked in water to protect the bike.)

It may look a little high but that gave me maximum back support.

Thanks everyone your input and pictures on this - it's giving me more ideals - rowiebowie, I'm still thinking about your pillion you have - what year of Rebel was that off of - just wondering if the pillion will fit all years of Rebels? The pan (underpart) of the pillion that I'm thinking about using to attach like a piece of diamond plate to the top of and maybe drill holes in the plate for tie-downs - don't know yet if this will if work.

GLW how did you mount the rack to the fender stays?

I have found a trunk that has a built in back rest with lights that I'd like to mount on my V* and I like what you did there it would save me about 100 bucks on brackets and luggage rack that I'd need to moun the trunk on.

OK GLW you really need to make that as a mass production item. Very cool indeed!

I bought all the metal from McMaster-Carr. I couldn't get thick enough round tube from the hardware store to give me a warm fuzzy feeling. I had even thought of putting a steel rod down the middle of the round tube but that was way overkill. The mount is a strip of stainless 1" x .060 formed into a P around the tube. A hammer and a vise and a scrap piece of round tube is all it took. They are mounted using the existing bolts.
