| I have a 96 Rebel with a very yellow headlight. I would like a new H4 headlight. Is it possible to change out the bulb in the headlamp or am I going to have to purchase the whole assembly? |

You have to change the whole thing.
If you want to keep a stock look, you can upgrade through a salvage yard by getting a light from a newer model. Or if you want to keep a stock look but want new, you can get one from a dealer or from Jack, who has an aftermarket that is very, very similar to the stock shell.
If you don't want or don't care about the stock look, then there are dozens-- possibly hundreds-- of aftermarket units available for relatively reasonable prices. _________________

I run them in all our bikes and cars. _________________ Jeff- Rebel Junky Extraordinaire

Not an option here. A 96 uses a 35 watt sealed beam. _________________

pre-2003s are sealed...
@Duke, yes, but most will need some sort of modification |

Right. If you grab a complete unit from a newer model Rebel, it's pretty much plug and play. Otherwise, you'll need to make a mount. _________________

I had no idea they were still using a sealed beam back in 96'. How strange _________________ Jeff- Rebel Junky Extraordinaire

I changed mine this morning. I bought a set of xenon lights off of eBay that were rebel compatible. Then I looked up cyclepedia for the info on how to change. It was really easy, just switch the bulbs. |

Moe: got a link? Like to see what they look like and what the specs are.
BB (how do you tune a BB, anyway?):
I think it was '03, maybe '04 when they finally upgraded the headlight. _________________

I'll take a picture once I get off work, I haven't seen how it looks like at night yet. I'll also post the specs. |

My '02 has a stock H-4 headlight. I know both of the previous owners and they assure me that it has never been changed. _________________ Michael -

. | The Toyota bB is the Japanese version of the Scion xB. Mine has been converted to a bB "tribute" (bB emblems and a bunch of other JDM parts). It's a Tuner car/wagon. Here is a pic of mine.

Hi again,
As promised, here is a pic of what it looks like now.
The pic is a bit misleading. It doesnt look as powerful IRL, and I've noticed it looks a bit yellowish during daylight, and has a bit of puple in it at night, JMO.
I got them off of ebay for about $10 bucks (it comes in a set of 2) including shipping costs. Here is a link to the manufacturer's website, which surprisingly sells them for $28. You'll find the specs there.

I found this site while looking for the lighting study mentioned earlier. Still need to study it more. Thought I'd give everyone something to mull over while I do.
I have seen the GE Nighthawk touted as the newest and best. Several sites claim that it marginally beat out the SilverStars in Consumer Reports tests. I have not read the CR tests.

Dan | Sounds like it would be good for the older Rebels if it works. _________________ Jeff- Rebel Junky Extraordinaire

bB:
The issue with the older Rebels is that the sealed beam is a 'one-off.' There is no other sealed beam ever sold aftermarket that is the same size. MR got really lucky some years ago and found an off-road light kit for a truck that the guts could, with some slight modification, be crammed into the stock bucket, but that's the only case I think any of us are aware of... _________________
