| My headlight works with low beam but not on high beam - do I really need to replace the entire thing - hard to believe that there is no way to just substitute the bulb. Just wonder how complex can that be(may be very complex indeed, but given some mods featured here, as well as wealth of engineering talent, I thought I'd ask). |

The answer depends on what your Rebel is.
If you've got the 35 watt sealed beam, then yes; you will have to replace the entire thing.
If you've got a newer style machine, then you can change just the bulb element.
If you have the older style headlight, since you have to change it anyway, I'd like to suggest a very, very popular modification:
replace it-- since you have to change it out anway-- with one of the newer style units. It doesn't do much for you this time (except it's often cheaper to get a complete new style from a salvage yard than it is to get the part you need from the dealer), but it really sets you up to save money and time should you need to change it again.
That, and the amount and quality of light thrown by the newer style machine are vastly superior to that of the older unit. Not just a financial upgrage, a safety upgrade, too! _________________

by 'entire thing' that means the sealed beam unit (the glass part) ... not the chrome shell bucket
I cobbled up a dual beam unit to replace mine

| I replaced mine with one from a salvaged 2005 rebel. Duke is right, the difference in the amount of light is substantial. It's a very easy switch. Check with Jack, he has the newer replacements. |
